HOUSING :

 

The Center works with the participant and public/ private housing mangers to locate housing which is accessible and suited to the participants needs.

ADVOCACY:

 

The Center provides assistance in resolving complaints in housing, education, employment and community programs.

INDEPENDENT LIVING COUNSELING:

The goal of Independent Living Counseling is based on the philosophy that a counselor with a disability is the best guide to independence.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING : (ILS)

The purpose of the independent living skills training program is to provide participants with the basic skills in support of independent living goals. Some of the areas in which training is provided are:

bulletDecision Making - Goal Setting
bulletSelf Advocacy - Assertiveness
bulletBudgeting - Money Management
bulletLandlord/Tenant Responsibilities

 

Additional programs are provided as needed on-site and at community based locations.

 

INFORMATION & REFERRAL:

 

Information is provided to participants and the general public regarding Center services and community resources. When appropriate, referrals are made as a means of assisting the individual in accessing needed services. The Center organizes and conducts workshops and seminars on disabilities. The Center also serves the community in providing technical assistance, thus creating an environment which is not only open, but accessible to all citizens. Speakers are provided to groups and other organizations interested in learning more about disability related issues and Center services. The Center assists in coordinating financial resources to assist in services such as adaptive equipment, home modifications, etc., as a means of increasing the level of independence for people with disabilities. The individual the Center and the community all work together to create choices and opportunities for people with disabilities.

 


When you meet a person with a disability

 

1.- Offer help but wait until it is accepted before you give it.


.

2.- Accept the fact that a disability exists.

 

 

3.- Talk directly to a person with a disability, not to someone accompanying them.

 

 

4.- Don't park in a handicapped parking space.

 

 

5.- Treat a person with a disability as a healthy person.

 

 

6.- Don't assume that lack of response indicates rudeness.

 

 

7.- Don't exclude or excuse a person with a disability from participation because of the disability.
